Memories from Race a goat day

Go Mbuzi!
Arriving late and wearing a silly overcoat nitegown, i went to the annual goat race in Dar's Leader's club grassy park. Johana's first impression was one of disgust, rich colonials brought there nanies to mind the children while they downed champaign and wore funny hats. They were forced to wear old tyme maids uniforms.- dispicable reality of the have's and the have nots. My first impression was reminiscant of a concert in tulip festival or harris park. There was kids activities and that attracted me staright away. i didn't even see a goat race, i simply beelined for the facepainting and enjoyed immensely using by dearly departed snazeroo. they ever had sparkels. it had been months since i was able to do this so i painted everone even darhing french Tamara, a friend who let me muck up her face into a garden and wore it thru dinner, washing it off the the bathroon at Talk of the town. butterflies and zebras and spiderman. Kids are all the same even if they are poor, black and hungry, they like to play pretent, scream & run about. there was a game for them to eat donuts off a string which costs 2 goat tickets -
-alternate segment, i had a prelimanary interview to be a kindergarden teacher. send me some good vibes so that the powers that be overlook my complete lack of credentials and see that my experience and imagination make me the perfect person for the job. i guess a part of me misses the status and reason to wake that gainful employment can bring.

wonder woman went where?

so.. Malawi for a diving certificate or Uganda/Rwanda for a glimpse in land through the mountain gorrilla jungles? when should i leave? soon. i want to return to dar before june 12. which gives little time for a 2 country safari. one week per county or less not including travel days...arg!!!!!!!!perhaps it is the jump start i need , having friends going along, momentum and confedience. i seem to lack that these days. i vaguely remebered a dream last nite, it had something to do with she-ra and super heros. i saw the film the davinci code. we had to push start the car to get out of the cinema parking lot.. it was fun. the movie inspired me to pick up the collection of short stories titled -wild woman who run with the wolves. the fat, old hairy hag who dances with all knowing partner of time and sings to the skeletons for rebirth of the desert.

Dear Editor at Adbusters

Dear Editor at Adbusters

My name is Sarah Fowler. I am currently living in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania; however I was born in Ontario, Canada. My interests include independent cinema, exotic languages, environmental circumstances and empowering children. I came to East Africa to direct a feature documentary about spiritual evolution; however I am still patiently awaiting the experience. The main theme emerging is that patience & persistence pays and that wazungu write the cheques.

I dwell in a small library and just had No Logo for dinner, it was delectable. At present I volunteer for Roots & Shoots, which is part of the Jane Goodall Institute; I get to talk to children about their 3 tiered environments and ask them what they can do about it. I spend lots of time connecting the dots of the plant-animal-human/mind-body-spirit/ thought-word-action ménage-a-trios. It works on many levels. Eventually I’ll get an experimental film out of the process.

A friend recently got an issue of Adbusters in the mail and I scooped it up. I understand you are looking for an African correspondent and you should know, I am your girl. Nimeishi katika Tanzania kutoka tarehe mwezi tatu na kabla nakaa Kenya mpaka semptemba. I am planning a trip to Uganda and Rwanda in June and will be returning to Kenya in August. Plus I have a lot of opinions, and a photo essay about the mental environment of city life in Tanzania. These photos will immediately follow your response to this application, until then... rambling poetry is what I got. I have also included as writing the press release from a fundraiser I am organizing as well as an outline and treatment for an under-funded film project currently under mental and physical construction. All this on top of my Curriculum Vitae, oh la la!

If you need more (check out www.aries-iris-arts.blogspot.com) or have any pertinent questions please do not hesistate to contact me in cyberspace via smfowsy@gmail.com ASANTE SANA & Enjoy!

Sincerely
…………………smf

Watoto Shamba - outline & treatment

Outline
Watoto Shamba = The children's garden
In the film Watoto Shamba I will show how creative energy, the very spirit of music and art brings growth to a small shack school, and hope to the children who make it so lively. On a day very much like today in a place called Nairobi there is a small wooden structure on a dry and dirty hill. One side of the rickety schoolhouse is a painted banner, white with a red heart stating WE LOVE MUSIC. Across the valley you can hear singing voices, songs of folklore and god. The choir is practicing in the garden, a dry valley with a plant for every child. This is where I will shoot the film and organize the event of the school’s first ever public play. Complete with props and costumes the children themselves get to write the stories they will perform and these plays will make up the bulk of the film. There are approximately 130 children from the surrounding slums of Kiberra and Dagoretti who attend the school for math, music, reading, food and hope. They are energetic, full of life and especially excited by visitors. That usually means treats like soda, biscuits and getting out of class for a concert.
Many of these children don’t have enough food to eat so they are sent to school for the free meal. They wear tattered uniforms that always look dirty and shoes that barely cover their feet. Despite their conditions they are always smiling and in high spirits. The slums surrounding the school seem invisible to the fancy cars which cruise past on their way to the mega mall at Nakumat junction. Women carry large jerry cans of water on their head, while also toting a child on her back or front. I once saw a pregnant women bend to pick a crying child without dropping a drop of water. These women are the mothers of the children at watoto shamba. Other children are left out of school, being needed at home to help the family survive. The children’s garden school has been a source of joy as well as place to receive knowledge accompanied by food, music, support and love. Quite a task considering the exterior of the school is merely a series of small aluminum shacks on a dusty red hill. There is a public garden built for all the community by the children and teachers, its spirit is astronomical. Now this urban sanctuary of education and nature is threatened by eviction, to make place for a luxury development. The community has no money to pay rent elsewhere or for building material for a new school. They are treading on prayers, and continuing to learn despite construction crews surrounding, chopping down trees.

This film is meant to combine arts and creative energies to the basic awareness of global circumstances. I want to remind people to be compassionate and to act positively on behalf of family, friends, communities and especially children. My hope is to inspire my audience to engage in their immediate environments and draw a connection between the entire world and its diverse people.

Treatment- Watoto Shamba
The film starts with 16mm hand animation of planet earth spinning. A high contrast of colours including black and white will be the tone of this mixed medium collage of hand drawn, classical and scratch animation. The turning globe at first made with foliage and water then becoming more modern in material context will have an accompanying soundscape of children playing, wind and the occasional bird (hornbill and rooster) then be moving towards traffic sounds. The attention will be on the physical geography, diverse yet interconnected with an overall mood of a joyful spirit. The turning will stop on the African continent, camera tracking in towards East Africa, Kenya, Nairobi (classical animation using different maps.) For the title sequence I want to have 6 children with face painted letters spelling "watoto shamba" on their cheeks and to have a poster explaining the translation of the children’s garden. This will require a pan camera movement of close up cheeks each written with one letter in the words Watoto. Then the children will turn to the other cheek and Shamba will be spelled, this time panning from left to right.
Filming of the school plays: Each grade level, will produce a 2 minute skit with subject matter of there choice. With 6 classes plus a primary level this accounts for 15 minutes of footage. The plays will be written and acted out by the children and can be about any subject whether it is telling the story of the school’s situation (likely the older classes) personal life experiences or folktales. The main guideline is the language of Kiswahili, that all plays must have an accompanying contistoria (canvas storyboard) and the time limitations of one roll of film. The plays will appear in the film in age group order, starting with the youngest to oldest and all of the 130 children will be involved. Ample time will be devoted to each group working on story development, physical blocking, and acquiring the required costumes or makeup plus rehearsals. Each play will have a corresponding canvass storyboard to act as an English pictorial translation which will be filmed is segments to be used as possible silent film frame cards. The tone is joyfulness in the face of misrepresentation, generally happy children living it what may be deemed uncomfortable circumstances. The general theme of the film is embracing a state of mind or being in contrast to a state of physicality or condition. Due to the transitory situation of the school & garden and the presence of the student’s smiles a divide will be illustrated. Considering the life situations of the people involved; the dramatic and precarious events of the future the question is posed -What happens after the film ends? What are they going to do?? Where will they go?? Will the school close? Or move? Before the credits roll a model of the school will be shown with a bulldozer trampling the garden, the title card will read… “Eviction? Extinction?” What is the future of the Children’s garden?" I have experience with Claymation model and would love to have the children build a clay model of their school however I may need to bring the classical hand animation used at the start of the film back for this dramatic ending scene. It will be followed by the contact information for the school's hero of a headmaster Moses, who personally lives with 30 of the orphaned children who attend the school and could use some support.
Credits of all involved, including the Kenyan children and school administrators, film crew and those providing funding, will roll at the end of the film. I intend for each child to sign their own name and age; either on a whole sheet of paper held close to there face or a collective credit list depending on film supplies. Contact information for potential supporters of the school will also be shown at this the end.

Kilimanjaro Invitation

Headline:
Lady of Leisure & Canadian volunteer, the exceptional Sarah Fowler scales Mt. Kilimanjaro in search of high art……….she finds receding glaciers.

Invitation:
After a Swahili life of floating on the Indian Ocean, enjoying chai and ugali and getting robbed more times that I care to admit to, I have landed here. At Jane Goodall’s house, in Dar es Salaam, volunteering for Roots & Shoots, organizing an art contest and being photographed for a newspaper. I have faced some solid truths and shadowy aspects of my own experience. I look forward to more of that same but perhaps with more composure, grace and peace. I listen to the waves and feel my identity wash away. Somewhere along my safari I have only run into baboons and feel a lacking of exotic zebra, twiga and elephant. I have also lost the focus of my film, it is no longer in my field of view, nor pumping thru my veins constantly refreshed from my breathing. I have an intention of climbing up the highest peak in these lands to gander at the perspective I find there. I am seeking sponsors and supporters to climb beside me in spirit. If you are interested in donating to my film-finding vision trek please send a cheque payable to or Sarah Fowler to my permanent address at 36 Masson court. London, Ontario, Canada, N6E-1H3 or contact me via email at smfowsy@gmail.com is you have any questions

PS. good news... after months on of the nasty emails i sent to the girl who took my camera has worked, she replied, with excuses appologies and a contact number to get my Vidcam back when i got to mombassa. hip hip horray. it can be easy!

kiswahili meeting

so jana (yesterday) i sat in on a meeting discussing a cross organizational plan to host and event for african child day. ( JUNE 16) I was very impressed at the breadth, goals and especially the bidget. However i mainly read the previous meeting minutes and the game plan as was circulated in english. the discussion was in swahili. I fell in love with a beautiful MZUNGU ( WHITE) women, I think she is french as works for a organization with the word "et" IN THE TITLE. Her swahili was the closest for me to understand, but i still could barely understand 3 words, instead i drank a soda and drew a picture of her. That is how i contribute ot meetings here, i guess.
Oddly a old friend said to me yesterday if i focused on something, anything it would be cool, i have focused on kiswahili but also on simply living peacfully and letting that be enough. hey, 65.89465% ( 2/3 plus kidogo)aint bad.

Nutshell SMF bio

Nutshell bio:
Sarah Marie Fowler is an independent visual media artist however she finds it difficult to define exactly what that is. If she were a sandwich she would be pork and cheese on white but prefers avocado and garlic on rye with papaya. She can be found in a swinging in hammock watching chickens strut around and simultaneously connecting the stars of the mind-body-sprit/ thought-word-action/plant-animal-human ménage-a-trios. After a tearful departure from Kenya she has put down some roots in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and has visions of one day, flying a balloon, owning a boat and winning an Oscar for best new documentary.

RE: PRESS RELEASE; Art & Photo Contest

Introduction

Roots & Shoots is an Environmental and Humanitarian Education Programmed for Youth, established in Dar as Salaam, 19th, February 1991, by Dr. Jane Goodall; and currently is found in more than 70 Countries in the World. The Programmed is executed through the Jane Goodall Institute a non-profit Organization devoted to wildlife Research, Conservation and Education. Roots & Shoots believes in young people involvement and in supporting our communities.

Art & Photo Contest Fundraiser
In order to fundraise for a historical field trip for 100 students from Dar es Salaam to Bagamoyo, Roots & Shoots is asking all interested people to become creatively engaged in our environment. This is an opportunity for hobbyists and professional artist to exhibit there talents to their peers and community members. It is also a chance to help support local youth with regional and cultural education. Roots & Shoots goal is to provide education and promote collective responsibility because young people are a reason for hope.

We will be hosting an open Art & Photo contest, for all ages with the general theme of the PLANT-ANIMAL-HUMAN- a peaceful unity. This is to be an interpretive guideline and it is meant to inspire new understanding of our natural environment. We welcome all entries from different mediums and intend to use the artwork collected to promote local and international artists. However, we also anticipate that this inspired avenue will help to bring awareness of the situation of orphaned or abandoned street children and how we all can offer support.

Consider this your call from the wild; we asking for submissions of both art and photography to be accompanied by the entry form which also outline the rules of the competition.
The early-bird deadline for entries will be JUNE 5, 2006 (WORLD ENVIRONEMENT DAY) with the last minute deadline of JUNE 15, 2006 before 4pm.
The awards ceremony will be held JUNE 16, 2006 (AFRICAN CHILD DAY).

We are requesting any interested organizations or businesses to get involved with the project by making any possible monetary or in-kind donations. Our goal is to raise 50 000tsh to help support local Roots & Shoots Clubs in primary and secondary schools.
BECOME INVOLVED IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY & NAUTRAL SPACES.
